Loki and Learning

I haven’t been able to keep up on episode reviews of Loki because I’ve been bombarded with schoolwork. I couldn’t not write about the show again though, so I thought I’d give an overall review of the show so far and the

Disney Plus has given us a lot of great content over the past two years. Marvel shows though have been taking center stage lately. First, we got Wanda Vision with its focus on dealing with grief and giving a once secondary character a major place in this new phase of the MCU. Then we got Falcon and the Winter Solider which not only taught us about dealing with grief but also accepting our place in the world no matter what else anyone expects.

Now we have Loki.

Loki is crazy, filled with Marvel easter eggs, and filled with the unexpected around every turn. But even this crazy show is teaching us important lessons.

1. Free Will

One of the first things Loki yells at the T.V.A after Judge Renslayer’s judgement in the first episode is,

You ridiculous bureaucrats will not dictate how my story ends!"

People don’t get to determine who we will be, we are all given free will. It’s a big part of Christianity as well. God doesn’t make us His robots. He gives us free will. The T.V.A tries to make Loki believe he will only ever evil, creating chaos and stabbing people in the back. It’s not until he meets Sylvie that he really starts to think that maybe, if she could be different by just being a female Loki, well maybe he could be something different as well.

His therapy session with Mobius in the first episode also helped a lot.

2. Bad Habits Can Be Broken

When Loki enters The Void and meets the other variant Loki’s they tell him that they are all the same. However, Kid Loki comments that our Loki is different. He replies that he’s not different, but Sylvie is.

Sylvie is different. Everyone suspects that her Nexus event is that she was playing hero as a child, saving Asgard, being part of the Valkery. This would be against the Loki plot the T.VA. (whoever oversees it) has in place. They had to “prune” her, but she decided that they weren’t going to decide her fate any further.

Granted she didn’t go about it the best way since she went for violent revenge, but she’s also still a Loki so we can’t be surprised.

In Ragnarök Loki realized he could have a different life if he stopped trying to get power and accept the fact that his brother wanted him, and he didn’t have to be evil. However, this Loki in the show though hasn’t gone through that yet, but he goes through an even deeper character arc in these six episodes then he does over the three Thor movies and of course The Avengers.

Bad habits can be broken but we have to accept the love others offer us and we have to accept that we can change- for the better.

SEASON FINALE SPOILERS AHEAD.

What I didn’t expect in the finale is that Loki would truly change, and Sylvie would be the one to choose to continue her hunt for revenge, unchanging from when we first met her.

I honestly figured Loki would want to take the Kang’s offer of ruling the timeline for power, not for protecting the free will of others. Sylvie doesn’t believe his reasoning though and they fight till Loki finally drops his dagger and basically declares his love for Sylvie (AKA himself).

FINALLY! Loki has a heart and he’s finally doing something other than backstabbing people. When Sylvie reacts by kissing him, I thought:

“Yay!”

Then she pushes him away back into the TVA, so she can kill Kang to enact her revenge. Then I thought:

“NOOO!” Why?! Why?!

I enjoyed this narrative episode, but it was probably the slowest of the entire season. For the biggest action to be the most heart breaking was hard!

I also think it surprised me because WandaVision wrapped everything up in the end, and Falcon did as well, and Loki did not wrap up the story. Quite the opposite, Loki gave us more questions than answers at the end.

Good news is Loki has been renewed for a second season and I can only imagine how long we’ll have to wait for it! I really hope it’s not after Multi-Verse of Madness. I also really hope we get to see Loki and other characters from show in Multi-Verse of Madness with Wanda and Dr. Strange.

This next phase of Marvel is going to be a wild ride!
