Cruella Movie Review

I want to talk about Cruella today. The movie came out a couple weeks ago and I’m still not over how different and awesome it is! Disney really stretched themselves with this one, holding the line of Disney fun and Disney Villains. The movie is dark but it’s also the origin story of a crazy Disney villain so what else could we have expected.

Emma Stone does amazing work as Cruella and I love how the theme of fashion is huge in this story line since it’s just a piece of it in the original films concerning the 101 Dalmatians. I think focusing on Cruella’s talent really humanized her, not to mention the true facts concerning her family. BUT I’m not going to spoil anything today.
Emma Thompson does amazing, of course, in her role as the Baroness. A fashion designer who Cruella aspires to become. Her whole attitude really reminds you of the Cruella we meet in the live action 101 Dalmatians with Glen Close (minus the desire to kill puppies).
There’s humor that really helps break up the dark elements of the movie and I love how we see a completely different side of Cruella, even different than one portrayed in 102 Dalmatians when Cruella is supposedly cured of her desire to kill puppies by a shrink.
The other characters we know from the 1996 Live Action, Horace, Jasper, and of course Anita and Roger are all present and each have an important role in Cruella’s origin story. I was surprised they set this story in the 70’s but I also think it really fit the vibe and I’m actually glad they didn’t take it as far back as the original animated version or even the 1996 live action.
The costumes were my favorite part of the entire film. It really fit the fashion theme and the outfits they created for Cruella were STUNNING! I think the only costumes I didn’t like were the ones Emma Thompson wore as the baroness, but I can see where they might have been trying to make her seem like the old fashioned type of fashion to make Cruella stand out as the new and improved.

I think as you watch you might be able to know what the big twist is but really even when it’s discovered it’s hard to grasp what’s going on, but not in a bad way. I think the story just takes you on so many turns that it’s just utterly captivating and one second, you’re here and another you’re there.
The ending is amazing and sets up nicely for a possible sequal. Yes, I know that would technically be 101 Dalmatians but there are still unanswered questions on how Cruella became the person she is that film. There seems to be one more bridge we need to cross before getting there. I honestly wouldn’t be upset if they remade the 1996 live action with Emma Stone as Cruella. I think it could work well and be a modern take on the aged movie.
