Blogger Tips

Happy blogger day! To celebrate I thought I'd share some tips I've found helpful as a blogger.

1. Write what you know!

Don’t try to blog about a topic you’re not familiar with unless your blog is about your journey learning something new. If your blog is geared toward giving tips about something, then make sure you know what you’re talking about. People will call you out if you don’t check the accuracy of what you’re saying.

It also helps you to commit to writing your blog consistently if it’s something you’re passionate about!

2. Write it like a story

One key thing I teach in Creative Writing is the importance of learning the elements of a plot. I’m not going into them all here but the one that is extremely important is the Exposition (the beginning). If you don’t hook your reader in at the start, you’ll only succeed in getting to click out of your blog and maybe even unsubscribe.

With a blog it stars with the title because that’s what the SEO catches and shows them when they search on google for something to do with the topic you covered. Make sure each title of your post is eye catching and compelling.

3. Be real!

Don’t try to fool your readers. They want authenticity. Don’t put filters over your life. Being relatable is how you get loyal readers because they like to read about people experiencing similar things as they are.

4. Have fun and be yourself!

I’ve seen a lot of different types of blogs. Tips and advice blogs, Mom Blogs, Teacher blogs, etc. One unique blog I came across was a girl who began it as a way of recording what she was grateful for daily. I love this unique idea!

One of my favorite movies is Julie and Julia and I love how Amy Adam’s character begins blogging (when blogging first became a thing) to chronicle her journey cooking through Julia Childs’ cookbook! Maybe you want to start something new, but you need some accountability? Use your blog as that accountability.

5. Edit!

Don’t rely on auto correct to catch your mistakes. Read your post out loud before posting it! If you don’t make sure your sentences and words are written correctly then your readers won’t take you seriously.

6. Make it a habit

I’ve always been interested in creating good, healthy habits and learning how to break bad ones. I came upon the 21/90 Rule, and it recommends work towards your goal (whatever that entails) for 21 days to make it a habit, and 90 days to make it a lifestyle change. As for how many times to blog in a week, many recommend to blog three times a week, but I’ve found that my schedule only allows for once a week. The point is once you’ve decided to do this, commit to it in a realistic way.

I hope you enjoyed these tips! I also hope that you let go of whatever is keeping you from blogging. Maybe blogging isn't as popular as it once was, but that doesn't mean it's not the right outlet for you. Blogging can be very therapeutic and fun at the same time.
